Metravel city quest
City Grodno: free walking route “Quest: The Royal City on the Neman” along the sights. 9 points. Approximately 2 h. Quests and legends - straight from your
Grodno has stood on the high bank of the Neman for almost a thousand years, and this whole city is about power and faith. Kings lived and died here — Casimir Jagiellon and Stephen Báthory breathed their last within these walls, the last Sejm of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth sat here, and for centuries Orthodox Christians, Catholics, Jews and Protestants lived side by side. Today you will walk across these stones.
I will lead you along a royal route above the river — from ancient Kalozha, which remembers the Rus before the Mongol invasion, past two castles of kings, to the Baroque heart of the city. Every stop has its own story and its own riddle, and the answer is right there in front of you. Look carefully: the stones of Grodno know how to tell stories.
The route points in order — what these places are and why they are interesting. Tasks and answers stay inside the quest.
This is where it all begins. The Kalozha (Boris and Gleb) Church has stood above the Neman since the 1180s — it is one of the oldest churches in all of Ancient Rus and the only surviving monument of Black Ruthenian architecture from the pre-Mongol era.
Climb from the river up the steep hill — here, power in Grodno literally sat on a mountaintop. The Old Castle was founded by Prince Vytautas back in the late 14th century, and in the 1580s King Stephen Báthory rebuilt it into a magnificent residence in the German Mannerist style.

You are on the other side of the moat — at the New Castle. It was built in 1737–1742 to a design by the Saxon architect Karl Friedrich Pöppelmann as a palace for kings and for sessions of the Sejm.

Between the ancient castles and the fire tower stands a monument to a man who defended medieval Grodno. The sculpture of Davyd Gorodensky is carved from a single piece of granite.
An optional stop for pleasure, not for riddles. The best discoveries on a trip often happen over a cup of coffee.
Opening hours: daily until 22:00
From the castles, turn uphill toward a tall brick tower. The fire watchtower was built in 1902 after a terrible fire that burned down almost half of Grodno.
Go down to the Great Choral Synagogue. For centuries the Jewish community of Grodno was one of the most influential in the region — rabbis, scholars and entrepreneurs came from here.
An optional stop — not a riddle, but a recommendation. Close to the route there is a place worth a short detour.
Opening hours: daily 09:00–23:00
The final stop of the route is the Baroque Farny Church of St. Francis Xavier, the cathedral of Grodno.
