Metravel city quest
City Mogilev: free walking route “Quest: Visiting the Stargazer” along the sights. 8 points. Approximately 1 h 30 min. Quests and legends - straight from your
On pedestrian Leninskaya Street in Mogilev sits a bronze Stargazer, pointing a finger at the sky. His telescope is the gnomon of an enormous sundial: by day its shadow creeps across twelve chairs, one for each zodiac sign, and every night a column of light shoots from the telescope into space. They say that from orbit, this beam is how people find Mogilev.
Today the Stargazer is looking not up but at you. He reads the city like a star map: every stop on the route is its own "star", from Stars Square through the town hall and the Baroque church to the old monastery above the Dnieper. Follow his map, look for a telltale detail at every stop, and in the finale you will return to the telescope not as a tourist but as someone who has read the whole constellation of Mogilev.
The route points in order — what these places are and why they are interesting. Tasks and answers stay inside the quest.
Here he is, the Stargazer by Vladimir Zhbanov, the very one who has gathered the whole route around him. The composition was unveiled in 2003 and is the only monument to a stargazer in the world.
An optional stop, for pleasure rather than puzzles. The best discoveries of a trip often happen over a cup of coffee.
Opening hours: Mon–Thu 08:00–22:00, Fri 08:00–23:00, Sat 09:00–23:00, Sun 09:00–22:00
The star map leads from the telescope to the brightest Baroque "star" of the city: the Church of St. Stanislaus (also the former Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary), built in 1738–1752.
The next point on the map is the red-brick drama theatre in the pseudo-Russian style, built in 1888 with public money and one of the oldest in Belarus.
The Stargazer's map brings you to the town hall, a symbol of Magdeburg law and the pride of free Mogilev since the 17th century. It was destroyed many times and in Soviet times razed completely, and the present octagonal tower was rebuilt in 2008, almost fifty metres high.
An optional stop: not a puzzle but a recommendation. Close to the route is a place worth a small detour.
Opening hours: daily 12:00–23:00
From here the star map descends to the Dnieper: the long "Лесвіца ў Падміколле" runs down from the upper town into the river floodplain. Tourists barely know it, but locals love it: from the top you can see the bend of the Dnieper and the domes of St.
Down below, right by the floodplain, stands St. Nicholas Convent, founded in the 17th century, the final "star" of the historic part of the map.
