Metravel city quest
City Lida: free walking route “Quest: Gediminas's Castle” along the sights. 9 points. Approximately 1 h 15 min. Quests and legends - straight from your
The town of Lida began with a single stone — the one Grand Duke Gediminas laid in the foundation of his castle in 1323. The castle rose on a marshy lowland as a shield against the crusaders, and a town gradually grew up around it. Almost seven centuries have passed since then, and each of them has left its mark here: a medieval fortress, a Baroque church, a round rotunda cathedral, the memory of war, and a brewery that made Lida famous throughout the country.
Today you will walk through those seven centuries on one short route. At every stop, time has left a sign — a detail you need to find with your own eyes before moving on to the next era. Start where it all began — from the walls of Gediminas.
The route points in order — what these places are and why they are interesting. Tasks and answers stay inside the quest.
The stone castle in Lida was founded in 1323 by Grand Duke Gediminas as a link in the line of defence against the crusaders: Navahrudak – Kreva – Medininkai – Trakai. It is believed to be the first stone castle of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania on Belarusian lands.
Opening hours: Daily; tower exhibitions run in sessions at 11:00, 13:00, 15:00 and 17:00; on Mondays only the castle courtyard is open · Ticket: Adults — 15 BYN, students — 11 BYN, schoolchildren — 8 BYN
An optional stop — not a puzzle but a recommendation. Near the route there is a place worth a small detour.
And here is a trace of the 18th century. Farny Church was built in 1765–1770 in the Vilnius Baroque style; the design is attributed to the famous architect Johann Glaubitz.
In the square behind Farny Church stands a bronze Francysk Skaryna — a native of Polotsk, a doctor of medicine from Padua and a printing pioneer. In 1517, in Prague, he published the Psalter, which marks the beginning of the history of Belarusian printed books, and later moved his printing house to Vilnius.
Seven centuries are not only castles and churches. The Mound of Immortality is a man-made memorial hill.
Time takes another step toward the places of worship. The Cathedral of St.
An optional stop — for pleasure, not for puzzles. The best discoveries on a journey often happen over a cup of coffee.
On the way to the brewery, a bronze bear dressed in a beer barrel strides atop a granite pillar. It was installed in 2016 for the 140th anniversary of “Лидского пива” — the brewery celebrated its anniversary right out on the street.
The last trace is the most lively and recognisable. Lida has long been jokingly called the beer capital of Belarus.
