Metravel city quest
City Novi Sad: free walking route “the secret case of Zmaj’s city” along the sights. 8 points. Approximately 1 h 40 min. Quests and legends - straight from
Everything on the square looks dignified: power, faith and monuments to heroes. But turn a corner and an imposing guardian stands above a former confectionery, while a famous poet looks like a passer-by. How did this trading city become the “Serbian Athens”? You have been handed a case with eight blank pages. On each one, you need to gather a clue: find a symbol, see past a first impression or compare two buildings. The final witness awaits you in the park — after meeting him, you will understand what really makes a city a cultural capital.
The editor, the case and the notebook are a fictional framework created for this walk. The places, people and events are real. The route follows the old centre, covering about a kilometre on foot; allow 60–90 minutes for an unhurried investigation. You do not need to enter buildings, buy tickets or look for hidden notes. Come in daylight and stay on paths open to the public.
The route points in order — what these places are and why they are interesting. Tasks and answers stay inside the quest.
The town hall looks like a palace, but its coat of arms tells the story of a city allowed to manage its own affairs, rather than a noble family. This grand building appeared in the late nineteenth century, when Novi Sad had long been trading, printing newspapers and drawing audiences to the theatre.
Opposite the town hall, Svetozar Miletić seems to be continuing an argument for which he no longer needs a podium or the sound of his voice. The five-metre figure makes the square feel like a place for public debate: here, the city's independence gains a human face and personality, as well as an official seal.
Opposite the city’s civic home rises a Catholic church that locals habitually call a cathedral, although the bishop’s seat is in another city. Its elongated silhouette is a reminder that Novi Sad grew out of different communities, each trying to leave a recognisable place for its own life on their shared square.
A warrior has taken up residence above the corner of this building, as though he lost his way between an old fortress and an elegant city drawing room, while famous cakes were once served below.
At the end of the lively street, Zmaj looks like someone who has stepped out of his home and paused briefly in front of the palace, rather than a hero from a distant age.
Behind the poet stands a palace with ornate patterns and windows quite unlike the strict vertical lines of the Catholic church you left behind on the square. Within a short walk, the city changes its architectural language: its cultural history grows from communities living side by side, rather than a single model of beauty for everyone.
At the junction of the streets stands a low old house, easy to overlook after the palace, although its story begins earlier than almost every building in the grand ensemble. Opposite it is the city library: in this small patch of the city, the trading past and the lives of readers are literally on either side of the same passage.
In the park, Đura Jakšić has settled in so casually that the city’s conversation seems to continue here without a podium or an official ceremony, alongside people out for a walk.
