Quest: Vilnius — Echo of the Iron Wolf

City Vilnius: free walking route “Quest: Vilnius — Echo of the Iron Wolf” along the sights. 12 points. Approximately 2 h. Quests and legends - straight from

According to legend, Gediminas dreamed of a wolf whose voice was stronger than a whole pack. The priest Lizdeika interpreted the dream as a promise of great fame for the city. But fame cannot be built overnight. Walk from the square to the castle and on to the old churches: find the different ways Vilnius tells its story. Remember what you can see here with your own eyes and what exists only in stories. All tasks are completed outdoors. Do not step into the road, go beyond barriers or enter closed courtyards to find an answer.

What is on the route

The route points in order — what these places are and why they are interesting. Tasks and answers stay inside the quest.

  1. The city's voice — Bell tower, Katedros a. 1

Six hundred years ago, this building served as a defensive structure for the city; its bells began ringing much later. Before calling the townspeople to worship, the city's voice had several jobs at once.

  2. An austere façade — Cathedral, Katedros a. 2, main façade

The cathedral changed many times along with the city and acquired its Neoclassical appearance at the turn of the XVIII and XIX centuries. Its bright, austere design is nothing like the fortress where we began our walk.

  3. The duke and the city — Monument to Gediminas, Šventaragio g. 2

Grand Duke Gediminas's letters of 1323 invited craftspeople and merchants from across Europe to the city. They contain the first mention of Vilnius by name, and this date is considered the beginning of the city's history.

  4. The palace restored — Palace of the Grand Dukes, Katedros a. 4, exterior façade

The restored palace recalls the centre of government at the foot of the hill as it was in the XVI century. The honest distinction between the surviving past and its modern reconstruction matters here, and the museum makes that distinction clear.

  5. On Castle Hill — Gediminas Tower, Arsenalo g. 5, outdoor terrace

Only one building of the Upper Castle has survived, and it has long been a symbol of the whole country. Legend places the duke's dream on this very hill, and the climb up remains one of the city's central rituals.

  6. A garden pause — Main fountain in Bernardine Garden, entrance from Maironio g.

Water, greenery and old monastery grounds meet in this part of the city, and the capital's rhythm changes noticeably. The Bernardines laid out the garden back in the XV century: they drained the marshy floodplain and created ponds and canals.

  7. ☕ Pilies kepyklėlė (optional) — Pilies kepyklėlė

An optional stop for pleasure rather than puzzles. “Pilies kepyklėlė” is nearby: drop in, catch your breath and talk about what you have seen, then continue the route or finish it here.

  8. The city learns — University complex, Šv. Jono g., view from outside

The university adds another voice to the city of dukes and poets — the voice of students and scholars. Its historic complex grew gradually and now occupies an entire block between four streets in the Old Town.

  9. The pattern of a city legend — Church of Saint Anne, Maironio g. 8

According to a well-known tale, Napoleon wanted to carry this church to Paris in the palm of his hand, and the legend lives on. It neatly captures the impression made by the delicate late Gothic craftsmanship, which has barely changed over the last five centuries.

  10. The city becomes a poem — Monument to Adam Mickiewicz, small park by Maironio g. 8

The poet adds another voice to the walk: the city lives in words as well as buildings. The granite monument to Adam Mickiewicz was unveiled on 18 April 1984, and its material was brought from Volhynia.

  11. The guardian of Užupis — Square at the junction of Užupio and Malūnų, tall column

Užupis invented its own city rules, artistic traditions and even its own holiday. The republic declared its independence on 1 April 1997, and its constitution hangs on a wall at the beginning of Paupio Street.

  12. Farewell at the gate — Gate of Dawn (Aušros Vartai)

The Gate of Dawn recalls the time when the city was surrounded by a defensive wall with several gateways. The duke's dream became a real city with houses, poets and travellers of its own, and the route ends here.
