Metravel city quest
City Trakai: free walking route “Quest: Trakai — What the Lake Holds” along the sights. 9 points. Approximately 2 h. Quests and legends - straight from your
Lake Galvė is said to hold many secrets: sunken riches, hidden halls and remarkable rescues. Our treasure is not lying on the lakebed. You will gather what the town has preserved on its shores: traces of faith, crafts, neighbours living side by side and the power of its dukes. Each answer reveals another part of Trakai — a town that has to share its space with water. All tasks can be completed outside. Do not step into the road, go beyond barriers or enter closed courtyards to find an answer.
The route points in order — what these places are and why they are interesting. Tasks and answers stay inside the quest.
Grand Duke Vytautas founded Trakai's parish church, and its founding charter was signed on 24 May 1409. The church remains one of the historic town's landmarks, and the streets naturally lead from here towards the lake.
Local tradition links this monument to the rescue of the owner of Užutrakis during a sudden storm on Lake Galvė. Saint John of Nepomuk is considered the patron saint of Trakai, and his monument stands in the heart of the old town.
The postal address brings our walk back to everyday communication in the town: this is where news from other towns arrived in Trakai. The house was built in 1810 by the Dominicans, who were then living in the Peninsula Castle.
Grand Duke Kęstutis began building the Peninsula Castle in the second half of the XIV century, and the fortification already appears in a list of towns from the end of that century. It once played a role no less important than the famous island castle, giving the town a second centre of defence on the map.
Karaimų Street retains the scale of small residential houses, and people in Trakai have long called it the Little Town. Everyday Trakai is noticeably smaller than its famous castles, something the buildings in this neighbourhood make clear.
The Karaim community is part of Trakai's living fabric, and its house of prayer is still in use on this street. We will pause quietly at this place of worship, without going inside or turning religious life into a spectacle.
An optional stop for pleasure rather than puzzles. Nearby is “Kybynlar (kibinai)”: drop in, catch your breath and talk about what you have seen, then continue the route or finish here.
The monument to Vytautas the Great appeared on Karaim Island, on the way to the island castle, back in 1994. Here, the history of the dukes meets the memory of the Karaim community and today's walks along the water.
It is particularly easy to imagine legends of treasure beside a fortress surrounded by water, and Lake Galvė has accumulated plenty of such tales. Yet all the valuable things revealed today are already there before your eyes: a street, faith, craftsmanship and the power of the dukes.
