Metravel city quest
City Minsk: free walking route “Independence Avenue Quest: The Riddles of Minsk” along the sights. 8 points. Approximately 3 h. Quests and legends - straight
This is not a stroll. It's a test for those who know how to think.
They say an old Minsk cipher-maker hid six riddles in the stone of the city. He didn't trust paper — so he left the keys right on the monuments: in dates, in the number of figures, in faces and inscriptions. You can't solve them from your sofa: the answers can't be googled, you have to see them with your own eyes and work them out with your own head.
The route runs along Independence Avenue — from the Gates of Minsk by the railway station to Yakub Kolas Square. It's about four kilometers on foot, so set aside two or three hours.
The rules: 1. Every stop has a task. Read the conditions carefully: often you need to COUNT, READ or CALCULATE something on the spot. 2. The hint points your thinking in a direction, but doesn't give the answer. 3. Don't rush. These riddles were made on purpose to be thought over.
Five riddles you'll solve along the way. The sixth, the main one, waits at the end of the route — it is the oldest name of the city.
The route points in order — what these places are and why they are interesting. Tasks and answers stay inside the quest.
Two twin towers have guarded the entrance to the city since 1953 — the Stalinist ensemble of the “Gates of Minsk”. One carries a huge clock, a war trophy brought from defeated Germany; on the other is mounted a cast coat of arms of a vanished republic.
The Red Church was built in the early 20th century by a man who lost two of his children — Simeon and Helena. The big tower is his grief, the two small towers are the memory of his children.
By the river stands the poet Yanka Kupala in bronze, leaning on a cane, and at his feet a spring bubbles and a metal flower blooms.
An optional stop — not a riddle but a recommendation. Near the route there is a place worth a small detour.
Opening hours: Mon–Fri 12:00–23:00, Sat–Sun 11:00–23:00
In the center of the square stands a four-sided obelisk crowned with the Order of Victory. At its foot burns the Eternal Flame, and on the faces of the pedestal are four bronze high reliefs.
An optional stop — for pleasure, not for riddles. The best discoveries of a journey often happen over a cup of coffee.
Opening hours: Mon–Sun 10:00–22:00
This monument is not a single statue but a whole theater in bronze. In the center the writer Yakub Kolas sits lost in thought.
The keys are gathered: 11 floors, Michael, the fern flower and two numbers from two squares. But the cipher-maker left one last, main riddle — about the very name of the city.
