City Blue Spring (Slavgorod District): free walking route “Blue Spring quest: the girl who became water” along the sights. 6 points. Approximately 1 h. Quests
A few kilometres from Slavgorod, in the forest near former Kliny village, water rises from the ground in a colour that seems unbelievable even in photographs. This is Blue Spring, also called the Blue Well, the most powerful ascending spring in Belarus and the whole East European Plain. It releases around sixty litres each second, almost five thousand cubic metres a day. Its water stays around five degrees all year: it does not freeze in winter and burns with cold in summer. Since 1985 it has been a nature monument of national significance.
People came long before protective designations, bringing a story. A mighty young woman named Katerina lived here, courted by two strongmen, Stepan and Mark. She loved Stepan but chose not through words: she promised to marry whoever threw a boulder furthest. Fate mocked her, and the unloved man won. Katerina declared she would rather serve people as water than live without love, struck herself against a stone and flowed out as a spring. Mogilev ethnographer Yevdokim Romanov recorded this legend in 1891, so its present form is already more than a century old.
The water has long been considered holy. Tradition says the Radimichi, a tribe living along the Sozh, accepted Christianity in these waters. A belief promises better health to anyone crossing the icy water three times. Every 14 August, for Makovey, thousands of pilgrims arrive from Belarus and beyond.
You will walk this story, from the turquoise ‘bath’ where water rises from below to the chapel, bathing pool, commemorative boulder and ford, ending beside the stream carrying Katerina's water into the Goluba and onward to the Sozh.
The route is short and level. The whole site is laid out for visitors and takes an hour to walk. One warning from the start: this water really is icy, and no task requires you to enter it.
The route points in order — what these places are and why they are interesting. Tasks and answers stay inside the quest.
Here is the spring itself, an oval ‘bath’ around twenty by twelve metres and up to two metres deep. Its colour looks as though someone dissolved the sky in the water.
Take a few steps from the spring to the small chapel within the visitor area. It is dedicated to the Maccabean Martyrs, whose feast the church celebrates on 14 August.
Behind the chapel is an open bathing pool for visitors who come to do more than look. People use it all year.
Remember how it began. Two strongmen, Stepan and Mark, courted mighty Katerina, settling their dispute through strength rather than songs or gifts: who could throw a boulder furthest?
A stream flows from the spring's ‘bath’, carrying the best-known local belief: anyone crossing its water three times gains health and loses illnesses. Paths descend to the water for that purpose.
Walk a little further along the stream, where the visitor area ends and ordinary Sozh-region woodland begins. This stream feeds a small river with a fitting name, the Goluba.
