Marc Chagall left Vitebsk young and spent almost his whole life in Paris — yet he always painted the same city. This one. From memory. Lovers float above the rooftops, a fiddler sits on the roof ridge, a goat gazes at the sky, domes drift over the Dvina — all of it is his Vitebsk, carried onto canvas thousands of kilometres from home.
Today you will walk not through paintings but through the real city that gave birth to them — and piece together what the artist kept in his memory all his life. From the house where he grew up, past the churches above the river, to the summer stage that thunders across the whole city. This house on the former Pokrovskaya Street is where the whole of Chagall's Vitebsk begins. It was built by the artist's father, Khatskel Chagall, a porter at a herring warehouse; the family was large and poor, with nine children in cramped rooms.
Opening hours: Daily 11:00–19:00 (ticket office until 18:30). Closed on Mondays. · Ticket: Adults — 5 BYN, students and schoolchildren — 2.50 BYN, preschool children — free.
A little further down Pokrovskaya, at the corner with Sovetskoy Armii Street, a bronze Chagall was installed in 1992 — the work of the Vitebsk sculptor Alexander Gvozdikov.
You recognise it at once by its striped masonry: rows of thin plinfa bricks alternate with rows of pale, hewn natural material. Exposed patches of the old masonry help tell the surviving parts of the building from the restored ones.
By the small river, the city walk meets another hero of art. A small figure of the poet stands in front of a sculptural backdrop with silhouettes of buildings.
Climb higher — and there they are, the very domes that drift across Chagall's canvases. The Assumption Cathedral stands on high Uspenskaya Hill above the Dvina, white as snow and visible from almost anywhere in the city.
A small break right along the way: the Vitebsk Tavern, Suvorov Street, by the town hall. You can have a coffee, catch your breath and move on.

An optional stop — for pleasure, not for puzzles. The best discoveries on a trip often happen over a cup of coffee.

You return to the centre — to the town hall, a sign that Vitebsk held Magdeburg rights and governed its own affairs. The present building with its tower was built in 1775; today it houses a local history museum, and at the top there is a viewing platform.
Opening hours: Daily 11:00–19:00 (ticket office until 18:30). Climb to the tower's viewing platform (40 m) — April to November, every hour on the hour 11:00–17:00. Climb to the viewing tower — 8 BYN. Preschool children — free.
The last stop is an open-air amphitheatre in a green ravine by a stream. This is the main stage of the Slavianski Bazaar, the international festival that has gathered Vitebsk every summer since 1992.
