A Quest through Toruń: Copernicus and Gingerbread

City Torun: free walking route “A Quest through Toruń: Copernicus and Gingerbread” along the sights. 8 points. Approximately 1 h 40 min. Quests and legends

Some cities were erased by war and moulded anew from concrete. Toruń is not one of them. The bombs passed it by, and its Gothic Old Town has survived almost intact — earning it a place on the UNESCO list. Here, in 1473, a boy was born into a merchant family who would later “stop the Sun and move the Earth”: Nicolaus Copernicus. He was the first to say out loud that the heavens do not revolve around us — we travel around the Sun.

Today you will walk through his city as though reading the pages of an old book. The town hall, the monument and Copernicus House, the leaning tower, the cathedral where he was baptised, and the fountain with frogs — each stop will leave you a sign of its own. Count stones, look for details on façades, study the figures. By the end, you will understand how this city held on to its own time. Let's turn to the first page — the town hall in the middle of the square.

What is on the route

The route points in order — what these places are and why they are interesting. Tasks and answers stay inside the quest.

  1. Old Town Hall

Here it is — the Old Town Hall, a massive brick cube in the middle of the square, one of the most imposing in Northern Europe.

  2. Copernicus Monument — Monument to Nicolaus Copernicus

Right beside the town hall sits the man himself — a bronze Nicolaus Copernicus, Toruń's most famous native. He has raised his right hand to the sky, towards the very stars whose movements he explained, while in his left he holds an astronomical instrument — a model made of hoop-like rings, once used to calculate the positions of celestial bodies.

  3. ✨ Restauracja Luizjana (Dwór Artusa) (optional) — Rynek Staromiejski 6, Toruń

An optional stop — a recommendation rather than a riddle. There is a place near the route worth a small detour.

  4. ☕ Grande Coffee (optional) — Grande Coffee

An optional stop for pleasure rather than puzzles. The best discoveries on a trip often happen over a cup of coffee.

  5. Copernicus House — Nicolaus Copernicus House

A few steps to one side, and you are at the house where that boy was born. Tall and narrow, with a pointed gable above and trading premises below — a typical home of a wealthy Hanseatic merchant.

  6. The Tower That Stands Differently — A defensive tower from the XIV century in the line of the city fortifications

Now for the city's strangest building — a defensive tower from the XIV century, standing in the line of the old city fortifications. Legend blames a Teutonic knight: he supposedly broke his monastic vow and, as punishment, was ordered to build a tower that would forever stand differently from all the others — an eternal reproach for his fall.

  7. Cathedral of the Two Saint Johns

The Gothic Cathedral of the Two Saint Johns is Toruń's largest church and the place where little Copernicus was baptised. In its tower hangs “Tuba Dei” — the “Trumpet of God”, one of Poland's largest medieval bells, whose deep sound carries for kilometres.

  8. The Raftsman's Fountain (Pomnik Flisaka)

The very raftsmen whose time was marked by the cathedral clock also left the city a much-loved legend. On Market Square stands a fountain with a bronze figure of a raftsman holding a violin.
