Metravel city quest
City Niedzica: free walking route “quest: the Incas’ treasure above the Dunajec” along the sights. 7 points. Approximately 2 h 30 min. Quests and legends
Of all treasure legends, this is Europe's only one to leave a physical trace formally recorded before witnesses.
On 31 July 1946, young lawyer Andrzej Benesz arrived at the castle above the Dunajec. Before ten witnesses, including the village head, border guards and a forester, he pointed at the gateway threshold and ordered digging. Twenty centimetres down, he recovered a palm-length lead tube. According to the record, it held decayed knotted straps, a quipu, the Incas' knotted writing, and gold plates engraved ‘Dunajecz, Vigo, Titicaca’. Three points on a world map, three gold caches from an empire gone for three hundred years.
How could Inca writing reach a Pieniny castle threshold? The legend says Sebastian Berzeviczy, a descendant of its owners, went to Peru in the 18th century and married a noble Inca woman. Their daughter Umina married a relative of Túpac Amaru, leader of the great rebellion against Spain. After the rebellion was drowned in blood, the family crossed the ocean with part of the Incas' gold and sheltered in the Berzeviczy ancestral home, Dunajec Castle. Assassins found them here too: Umina was stabbed beside the walls in 1796. Her young son was adopted under a new name; even a trace of a Latin act of 1797 survives. The treasure was supposedly hidden. Where? The quipu said.
What the tube truly held can no longer be checked. The quipu vanished, Benesz gave confused accounts of its fate and died in a car crash in 1976, naturally called the Incas' curse by rumour. But the threshold remains. Today you will cross it.
This short, eventful route starts with the granary and carriage house below, then the castle. Tickets have timed entry: buy ahead at bilety.zamekniedzica.pl or the office; summer opening is 9:00–19:00. Then comes the dam across the Dunajec and, optionally, rival Czorsztyn Castle's ruins on the opposite bank. We start at the ticket office below the castle.
The route points in order — what these places are and why they are interesting. Tasks and answers stay inside the quest.
Before climbing to the gate, look at the castle's modest neighbour: a low 18th-century granary just below the ticket office. Dunajec Castle was never merely a fortress.
Beside the granary is the carriage house. Inside are horse-drawn vehicles from 1900–1939, the kind used by the castle's final owners, the Hungarian Salamon family, who held Niedzica until the end of the Second World War.
Climb to the castle. You enter a seven-century-old fortress, begun around the 1320s and mentioned in county head Wilhelm Drugeth's 1330 will as ‘recently built’.
Climb to the upper courtyard, the fortress's oldest part. At its edge yawns a well carved tens of metres into limestone rock.
Step onto the middle castle's terrace and the Pieniny Mountains unfold the whole scene before you. Lake Czorsztyn shines below.
Descend from the castle to the dam. Its crest has a public footpath, Niedzica's finest walk.
The final stop is optional, for anyone wanting more than one castle: Czorsztyn's ruins on the opposite shore. In summer, roughly May–September, boats leave the landing below Niedzica Castle every twenty minutes.
