City Krakow: free walking route “Kraków Quest: The Wawel Dragon” along the sights. 9 points. Approximately 2 h. Quests and legends - straight from your
They say a dragon named Smok once slept beneath Wawel Hill — he devoured cattle and maidens and terrorised the whole city on the Vistula. The dragon is long gone, but his trail remains: scales of the legend are scattered all over Kraków — on façades, in coats of arms, on bridges and towers.
Today it is you who will follow that trail. I am your guide, and you are the tracker. At every stop I will tell you what really happened here and what the legend says, and you will find the clue and move on. All the clues lead to one place — the lair itself.
Here is how it works: you read the story, look around, complete the task right on the spot and enter your answer — and the next stop opens. The hint only points your eyes in the right direction; it never contains the answer. Shall we go?
The route points in order — what these places are and why they are interesting. Tasks and answers stay inside the quest.
The Floriańska Gate («Brama Floriańska», around 1300) is the only one of medieval Kraków’s eight city gates to survive. The Royal Route began here: along it, kings rode in solemn procession into the city for their coronation in Wawel Cathedral — and that is exactly where our trail will lead us in the end.
Two unequal towers of St Mary's Basilica rise above the square: the northern one is 81 metres high, the southern one 69. According to legend, two brothers, both stonemasons, built them.
The Cloth Hall (Sukiennice) was medieval Kraków’s “shopping centre”: for centuries cloth, spices, lead and salt from nearby Wieliczka were traded here.
Opening hours: Tue–Sun 10:00–18:00, closed Mondays · Ticket: regular 35 PLN, reduced 25 PLN, family 70 PLN; free entry on Tuesdays
You are standing at the heart of Kraków — Market Square (Rynek Główny). It was laid out in 1257, when Prince Bolesław the Chaste granted the city Magdeburg law, and since then its outline has barely changed: two hundred metres by two hundred — one of the largest medieval squares in Europe.
An optional stop — not a puzzle but a recommendation. Close to the route there is a place worth a small detour.
Opening hours: Mon–Thu 13:00–22:00, Fri–Sat 13:00–23:00, Sun 13:00–22:00
An optional stop for pleasure, not for puzzles. The best discoveries of a journey often happen over a cup of coffee.
Opening hours: Sun–Thu 08:00–19:00, Fri–Sat 08:00–20:00
Kazimierz was founded in 1335 by King Casimir the Great as a separate town and later became the main centre of Jewish life in Kraków. Seven synagogues survive here.
Opening hours: Mon 10:00–15:00, Tue–Sun 09:00–17:00 · Ticket: Standard 22 PLN, concession 16 PLN, family 44 PLN; free admission on Mondays
Father Bernatka Footbridge (Kładka Ojca Bernatka) is a pedestrian and cycle bridge over the Vistula. It opened on 30 September 2010 on the site of the old Podgórze Bridge, linking Kazimierz and Podgórze again.
Here it is: the lair that the whole trail has led to. Smocza Jama, the Wawel Dragon's cave beneath the royal hill.
Opening hours: In season, from 24 April to 31 October: daily 9:00–17:00 (last admission 10 minutes before closing) · Ticket: Standard 15 PLN, concession 10 PLN; children under 7 free
