Kazimierz Quest: Kraków’s Jewish Quarter

City Krakow: free walking route “Kazimierz Quest: Kraków’s Jewish Quarter” along the sights. 9 points. Approximately 2 h. Quests and legends - straight from

For six centuries, Kazimierz was a separate city — Kraków’s Jewish heart, enclosed by its own wall. King Casimir the Great founded it in 1335, and almost at once a legend attached itself to the dry historical record: supposedly, it was all because of his love affair with a beautiful Jewish woman named Esterka. The chronicler Jan Długosz wrote it down; historians have their doubts, but Esterka’s name lives on in Kazimierz.

Here, legend and fact are woven so tightly together at every turn that you cannot always tell them apart at first. Wars and the 20th century almost erased the old way of life — but the streets, synagogues, cemetery and doorposts remember it all. The past is not hidden in a museum here; you can read it right on the stones.

Your task in this quest is to explore Jewish Kraków like a detective: use façades, gravestones and doorposts to work out what is legend and what is true. Each stop will leave you with a clue. Begin at the busiest place in the quarter.

What is on the route

The route points in order — what these places are and why they are interesting. Tasks and answers stay inside the quest.

  1. Plac Nowy and the “Okrąglak” — Plac Nowy

Plac Nowy is the old Jewish market square, and trade still keeps it alive. At its centre stands a low, round building: a former ritual meat market that Kraków’s residents affectionately call the “Okrąglak”.

  2. ☕ Bazaar Bistro (optional) — Bazaar Bistro, Plac Nowy 6, Kraków

An optional stop — for pleasure rather than puzzles. Some of the best discoveries on a trip happen over a cup of coffee.

  3. Old Synagogue — ul. Szeroka 24

The Old Synagogue is the oldest in Poland, known since the middle of the 15th century. After the fire of 1557, the Florentine master Matteo Gucci rebuilt it: he kept the Gothic framework but raised the walls and hid the roof behind a tall Renaissance parapet, making the building look like a small fortress.

  4. Remuh Cemetery and the “Wailing Wall” — ul. Szeroka 40

The cemetery was established in 1535, and burials continued here until 1800. During the war, the Nazis turned it into a rubbish dump and smashed the matzevot — the gravestones; barely fifteen survived on the surface.

  5. High Synagogue and Traces of Mezuzot — ul. Józefa

The High Synagogue (1556–1563) takes its name from its unusual layout: the prayer hall was placed upstairs, directly above the shops that continued trading below — the building’s owner simply added a synagogue above his own shops. There is nothing else like it in Poland.

  6. ✨ Starka (optional) — ul. Józefa 14, Kraków (Kazimierz)

An optional stop — a recommendation rather than a puzzle. Close to the route is a place worth a small detour.

  7. Corpus Christi Basilica — ul. Bożego Ciała 26

Kazimierz was not only Jewish: Corpus Christi Basilica is the quarter’s main Catholic church, founded by the same Casimir the Great. A legend explains why: a gilded monstrance containing the Blessed Sacrament was stolen from All Saints’ Church.

  8. Esterka’s House — ul. Krakowska

Here is the house that has been linked for centuries with Esterka — the king’s beloved. It is said that they met here in secret, and that an underground passage supposedly led from here to Wawel beneath the Vistula.

  9. The Church at Skałka — ul. Skałeczna 15

The final stop is Skałka, the church on a rock above the Vistula and one of Poland’s most revered places. In 1079, a bishop of Kraków was killed here at the altar on the orders of King Bolesław the Bold — the bishop who had fallen out with the king and been sentenced to quartering.
